Sis came to Rio Hondo as our new coach when I was a junior in high school and she had just graduated from college. At the time she seemed "much older"-- which in later years was just no time difference at all! As our coach, she was an excellent example and mentor in helping us develop the things we had been taught such as good sportsmanship, honesty, teamwork and just being ladies, while playing the sports we all enjoyed. I always told her she helped us with our "character building".
When Bill Turnbull and I married in 1960, Lloyd was the best man in our wedding. He and Sis used their 1958 turquoise and white Mercury for our "getaway" car but someone had loosened the spark plug wires so it wasn't a very fast getaway.
During the summers when Bill and I spent some time at Rio Hondo, we looked forward to going water skiing in the Arroyo with Sis and Lloyd. I was not a good swimmer but always used a life vest. One time I pushed off from the pier--without my life vest--and let my water skis get on top of the water with my head way under (the klutz that I am), panicked and got in real trouble.
Bill was waiting with the movie camera to take my picture and Lloyd was driving the boat. Neither realized I was in trouble but Sis quickly dove in and rescued me. It was good to have a "lifeguard" when I needed her. I always reminded her that she really did save my life!
Over the years, time, distance and raising our families kept us from visiting much but we did keep in touch. In January 2009, Sis came to Dallas for health reasons and we re-connected. We had each lost our husbands and I am so thankful for the time Sis and I got to visit and share memories with each other. We got to laugh at ourselves in our "older years" and would go to Wal-Mart for our outings once a week!
Bill and I thought so much of Sis and Lloyd. They were wonderful, honest, hard working people and we were blessed to have them as friends.
